Farmers Urged to Embrace Climate-Smart Agriculture

The Chairperson of Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate Mrs. Cesarie Kantarama addressing to the press after the meeting on Climate Smart Agriculture

The INGABO Farmers’ Syndicate’s recent report highlights the ongoing threat of climate change to agricultural production, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. This decline in productivity negatively impacts the economy and exacerbates poverty in the region.

In response, the INGABO Farmers’ Syndicate is urging farmers to adopt climate-smart agriculture practices. This includes planting resilient crops that can withstand varying weather conditions, especially during dry seasons, to enhance production.

To boost productivity, the Syndicate has implemented strategies to educate farmers on modern agricultural techniques. These methods aim to improve both the quality and quantity of crops, protect soil by preventing erosion, and promote water harvesting techniques for irrigation during dry seasons.

Additionally, the INGABO Farmers’ Syndicate is addressing malnutrition, a significant human security issue in Rwanda, by helping farmers develop skills to prepare nutrient-rich meals. This includes teaching them how to create kitchen gardens to grow a variety of vegetables using affordable methods as a home-grown solution.

The Syndicate has also introduced measures to protect the environment. These initiatives aim to prevent deforestation, promote the cultivation of tree species that coexist with crops without harming them, and encourage farmers to avoid using fire on their farms. Instead, they are taught to collect animal manure for use in biogas production, a modern cooking method that protects the environment.
