During a meeting held on August 30, 2024, at Lucerna Hotel in Muhanga District, Southern Province, to prepare for the 2025A Agricultural Season, the Chairperson of Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate, Mrs. Césarie Kantarama, addressed the participants. She emphasized the importance of professionalism among farmers, advocating for performance-based farming, the setting of clear and measurable targets, and ensuring joint planning among different stakeholders, alongside smart information sharing.
This meeting gathered participants including agronomists from the 10 Districts where the European Union-funded Gwiza-Muhinzi project is being implemented: Kamonyi, Muhanga, Ruhango, Nyanza, Gisagara from the Southern Province; Nyamasheke, Rusizi from the Western Province; and Kayonza, Gatsibo, and Bugesera from the Eastern Province. Also present were representatives of cooperatives, leaders, and staff of the Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate, Farmer Field Facilitators, among others.
After discussions, all participants committed to adopting and implementing the highlighted recommendations. They pledged to embrace ZaiPit technology, a modern method of planting cassava in pits, and to encourage farmers to use this technique for better yields. They also agreed to establish new demonstration plots where farmers can learn about this technology.
Mrs. Kantarama, who also served as the guest of honor, expressed her gratitude to the participants for their dedication to finding lasting solutions to food shortages. She urged them to promote the discussed values and ensure that the resolutions of this meeting are communicated to the farmers in their respective areas, with a particular focus on spreading the ZaiPit technology to all cassava-growing regions for improved productivity.
The meeting also highlighted that 100 new demonstration plots would be set up during the term, with 10 plots in each district covered by the Gwiza-Muhinzi project, to reach as many farmers as possible.
Participants applauded the Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate for its tireless efforts in supporting and encouraging farmers in their cooperatives to adopt new farming technologies, use improved seeds, and unite in the fight against the effects of climate change, which poses a significant threat to the world today.
