From September 11th to 13th, 2024, a team comprised of various cassava traders and staff from the INGABO Farmers’ Syndicate, led by Chief Executive Officer Mr. François Xavier Mbabazi, conducted a three-day field exchange visit to the Rubavu and Rusizi borders, both located in Rwanda’s Western Province. The purpose of the visit was to learn about cross-border cassava trade.

In Rubavu District, the team met with several cassava traders, including leaders of the UMUHUZA cooperative, represented by Mr. Ntakiyimana Valens. The meeting focused on exploring how both parties could collaborate to enhance the cassava trade, increase income from the crop, identify market opportunities, and address gaps that hinder smooth cooperation. The ultimate goal is to boost economic growth for cassava farmers, traders, cooperatives, and the country at large.

On the second day, the team continued its visit to Rusizi, where they were warmly welcomed by leaders of the GAHINGA JYAMBERE Cooperative, a large and professional group of cassava traders headed by Mrs. Esther Uwamahoro. Mrs. Uwamahoro praised Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate for its significant role in increasing cassava production both in terms of quality and quantity. She emphasized the existence of a strong market demand beyond national borders and urged cassava traders to expand their vision to international markets.

She also expressed her commitment to working with the Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate to find a lasting solution to the cassava shortage in the market, stating, “This business can be highly profitable if done professionally.”

During his address, the CEO of Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate thanked the leaders of the aforementioned cooperatives for their warm welcome, commitment, and willingness to collaborate and share their expertise in promoting cassava productivity.
