Strengthening Cassava Seed Multiplication: Basic Seed Multipliers Receive Professional Training in Muhanga

From November 19th to 21st, 2025, Lucerna Kabgayi Hotel in Muhanga District, Southern Province, served as the venue for a three-day capacity-building training for new and existing cassava seed entrepreneurs on Global Agricultural Practices ( GAP) standard regulation of seed multiplication operating in five screen houses located in Gisagara, Kamonyi, Gatsibo, Nyamasheke, and Ruhango districts.

The training brought together key actors engaged in cassava seed production, with the overarching goal of enhancing professionalism, compliance, and efficiency in the multiplication of improved cassava varieties.

Over the course of the workshop, participants received hands-on technical guidance aimed at strengthening their understanding of standards, rules, and procedures governing cassava seed production in Rwanda. The sessions placed strong emphasis on the regulatory frameworks of the Rwanda Inspectorate, Competition and Consumer Protection Authority (RICA) and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB). By increasing awareness and adoption of these guidelines, the program aims to improve seed quality, align production practices with national regulations, and promote greater accountability among multipliers.

According to facilitators, the training responds to the growing need for a reliable and professional cassava seed system capable of supporting national food security and agricultural transformation goals. Improved cassava seeds are essential for boosting productivity, enhancing resilience against pests and diseases, and ensuring farmers have access to clean, high-quality planting material. Strengthening the capacity of basic seed multipliers plays a critical role in achieving these outcomes.

Participants expressed strong appreciation for the opportunity to deepen their technical knowledge and strengthen their role within Rwanda’s cassava value chain. The training is expected to contribute significantly to increased multiplication of improved cassava seeds, better compliance with national standards, and a more professionalized seed production system across all Districts where SCORE Rwanda Project is being implemented.

This initiative underscores Rwanda’s continued commitment to promoting sustainable, high-quality agricultural inputs and empowering local seed producers to meet the rising demand for improved cassava varieties nationwide.
