University of Rwanda and Kepler College Delegation Visits Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate to Advance AI-Driven Agriculture

On February 6, 2026, Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate was honored to welcome a distinguished delegation from the University of Rwanda and Kepler College, led by Prof. Charles Ruranga. The visit underscored the growing importance of partnerships between academia and farmers in building a smarter, more innovative, and technology-driven agricultural sector in Rwanda.

During the visit, the delegation introduced the OPTIMAR AI Project, an ambitious initiative designed to harness artificial intelligence (AI) to transform cassava production and strengthen agricultural value chains. Discussions explored exciting collaboration opportunities between academic institutions and Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate, with a strong focus on cassava seed systems, smart disease detection, value chain optimization, and industrial automation.

The engagement also highlighted key challenges affecting the cassava sector, including seed quality issues, disease detection gaps, limited value chain coordination, and processing inefficiencies. Participants identified priority areas where AI-driven solutions can empower farmers, cooperatives, processors, and industry players to improve productivity, enhance quality, and increase competitiveness in local and regional markets.

Funded by the National Council of Science and Technology (NCST), the OPTIMAR AI Project aims to explore innovative applications of artificial intelligence to address cassava seed quality challenges, strengthen disease surveillance, and streamline value chain operations. By integrating cutting-edge technology with practical farming systems, the project seeks to unlock smarter, data-driven solutions that will benefit farmers and agribusiness stakeholders across Rwanda.

This visit marks a significant step toward fostering collaboration between researchers and agricultural practitioners, paving the way for digital transformation and sustainable growth in Rwanda’s cassava sector and beyond.
